LOWINFOOD

Know more about the social impact of the recovery and donation to charities of fruit and vegetable products

AREFLH is a partner of LOWINFOOD, a project that  focuses on “Multi-actor design of low-waste food value chains through the demonstration of innovative solutions to reduce food loss and waste”. LOWINFOOD supports the reduction of the loss and waste in the European Union by demonstrating innovative solutions following a multi-actor approach along the entire value chain.

The project is in its final phase, with partners immersed in the dissemination of the results they are attaining. The results were not only strictly linked to the efficiency, the socio-economic and environmental impact of the innovations. Partners have also learned other kinds of lessons during the implementation of the innovations that are worth highlighting.

So find here the results of the evaluation of the social impact of the software (S.I.R Platform) created by the government of the Emilia-Romagna Region in Italy.

This software promotes and facilitates the management and donation of surplus fruits and vegetables to certified charities. It allows continuous monitoring of the quantities of food donated. Farmers who contribute their surpluses are reimbursed by governmental mechanisms, and its effectiveness and transparency have led the system to garner numerous positive evaluations from both national and EU policymakers.

The S.I.R platform has evaluated for the first time the social impact thanks to the researchers of LOWINFOOD. This evaluation has elucidated the value created by rescuing fruits and vegetables across various participants in the food rescue chain, including procedures and Pos, charities, public administrations and other stakeholders. Simply, the study calculates how many euros of social value are generated by each euro invested in the operation of S.I.R platform.

The research contributes to explaining the effects of food recovery and donation efforts, emphasizing the critical need for a collaborative approach involving multiple stakeholders to fully understand the real benefits that this programme offers.
