AREFLH is a partner of the project NOVASOIL project  focuses on “Innovative on Innovative business models for soil health”. In the framework of the project, we have the new output of “Innovative Business Models for Soil Health.

Soil is more than just dirt—it’s a living system that plays a key role in your farm’s success. Healthy soil supports strong crops, retains water, reduces input costs, and fosters biodiversity. But when soil health declines, it quickly shows in your harvest.

Why Healthy Soil Matters

Healthy soil:

  • Provides essential nutrients to plants
  • Supports root growth through good structure
  • Balances water retention and drainage
  • Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers
  • Hosts beneficial organisms like worms and microbes

Poor soil leads to weaker crops, higher costs, and more disease and pests.

Signs of Healthy Soil

You can often assess soil health just by looking at it and the plants growing in it:

  • Dark Colour: Rich brown or black soil means high organic matter.
  • Crumbly Texture: Soft and loose soil allows for good root growth and water flow.
  • Worms and Insects: Their presence signals active, living soil.
  • Good Drainage: Water should soak in easily without pooling.
  • Healthy Roots: Long and branched roots indicate fertile, well-aerated soil.

Simple Soil Health Tests

No need for lab equipment—these easy tests can tell you a lot:

  • Water Infiltration Test: Time how long water takes to absorb into the soil. Fast = good structure.
  • Soil Clod Test: Squeeze a moist clump. Crumbly = ideal; hard = compaction; falls apart = too sandy.
  • Screwdriver Test: If it’s hard to push in, the soil is compacted.
  • Root Test: Uproot a plant—deep, branched roots mean good conditions.
  • Glass of Water Test: Drop a soil clod into water. Slow breakdown = strong structure.
  • Smell Test: Earthy smell = healthy. Rotten smell = excess water or poor decomposition.
  • Salinity Check: Mix soil with water—salt residue means drainage issues.

Final Thought

Healthy soil is the heart of sustainable farming. Regularly observing and testing your soil helps you make better decisions for stronger, more resilient crops.
