AREFLH is a partner on the  WASTE4SOIL project “Turning food waste into sustainable soil improvers for better soil health and improved food system”. It aims at developing applicable recycling technical pathways to transform Food Processing Residues (FPR) into improvers, through a circular, system, and multi-actor approach. All food chain actors are involved at the regional level, thereby closing specific loops (nutrients, organic matter, water).

On 5–6 November 2025, Waste4Soil participated in the 3rd European Mission Soil Week at Aarhus University, Denmark. This year’s theme, “Leading the transition towards healthy soils: finance and landscape perspectives”, comes at a pivotal moment following the provisional agreement on the EU Soil Monitoring and Resilience Directive, marking a major step forward in soil protection and restoration across Europe.

The first day focused on scaling soil health through new business and investment models, highlighting the EU Mission Soil’s role in advancing sustainable land management. The second day emphasized healthy soils within multifunctional landscapes, showcasing Denmark’s initiatives in climate change mitigation, biodiversity, and reduced environmental impact from agriculture.

Waste4Soil’s Coordinator, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), together with partner Savonia University of Applied Sciences, represented the project at the event. CERTH also presented Waste4Soil within the Mission Soil project “TRAIL”, showcasing how the project transforms food processing residues into sustainable soil improvers through circular and multi-actor approaches. The presentation highlighted innovative practices, such as biostimulant development and nutrient recycling, and demonstrated how these solutions contribute to soil restoration, climate-smart agriculture, and resilient food systems. By sharing lessons learned and practical results, CERTH emphasized the project’s potential to inform policy, guide stakeholders, and foster collaboration across the European soil and agricultural sectors.

The event gathered policymakers, researchers, farmers, land managers, financial institutions, businesses, and citizens to exchange knowledge, address challenges, and co-create innovative solutions for sustainable soil management.
