New members

AREFLH is pleased to announce the arrival of two new members.

These are the APO Europae, an Italian organisation that joins the College of Producers and SPPIOPO, the Polish association of Tomatoes and Cucumbers under greenhouses, in the College of Associate Members (experts).

AREFLH thus increases its representativeness at the European level, with members in 14 countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Sweden.

AOP Europae

 

The Europae APO is based in Italy's Campania region. It represents 13 producer organizations that produce, in various regions of Italy: table grapes, cherries, apricots, peaches, figs, Jerusalem artichokes, tomatoes and processing tomatoes, fennesl, onions, cauliflowers, Costa d'Amalfi lemons (PGI), Etna prickly pears (PDO), blood oranges (PGI) and Giffoni hazelnuts (PGI).

The APO Europae has an efficient structure whose aim is to strengthen the skills of its members, activate benefits to optimize costs, amplify development opportunities and also improve members' market positioning.

Among other missions, the APO draws up plans for the promotion and enhancement of its products, and promotes research projects with a view to technological and scientific innovation. It promotes access to subsidized national and international funding programs.

SPPIOPO, Association of Tomatoes and Cucumbers under greenhouses

The organization represents 60% of the country's production. It is particularly motivated by increasing quality requirements, the need for stability and continuity of supply and climate challenges.

Some figures from the sector:

  • Currently, in Poland, tomatoes and cucumbers grown under greehouses constitute about 80% of the cultivation of these vegetables.
  • In 2023, the number of people directly employed in the production of tomatoes under cover in Poland ranged from 10,000 to 12,000, while the production of cucumbers under cover employed between 8,000 and 10,000 people.
  • The total area of ​​cultivation of tomatoes and cucumbers under cover in Poland currently amounts to more than 1,400 hectares.
  • Poles consume about 10 kg of tomatoes per year.
